No 1o semestre de 2013, o foco central do grupo está direcionado para a conclusão de alguns projetos iniciados em 2012, bem como com o início da coleta de dados de alguns projetos de pesquisa.

J Strength Cond Res 23(x): 000-000, 2009-The purposes of the present study were to determine the patterns of age-related changes in 1) height (HT), body weight (BW), fat-free weight (FFW), and absolute isokinetic peak torque (PT); and 2) isokinetic PT covaried separately for HT, BW, FFW, and HT and BW combined in young wrestlers. One hundred twenty-five male wrestlers (mean age +/- SD = 14.3 +/- 2.4 yr; range = 11.1-18.2 yr) volunteered to perform concentric, isokinetic leg extension and flexion at 180 degrees .s on a Cybex II dynamometer to measure PT as well as underwater weighing to determine FFW. The polynomial regression analyses indicated there were significant quadratic increases across age for HT (R = 0.62), BW (R = 0.56), and FFW (R = 0.47). For leg extension, there were significant increases across age for absolute PT (quadratic, R = 0.66), PT covaried for HT (linear, r = 0.10), PT covaried for BW (linear, r = 0.12), PT covaried for FFW (quadratic, R = 0.32), and PT covaried for HT and BW combined (quadratic, R = 0.11). For leg flexion, there were significant increases across age for absolute PT (linear, r = 0.59), PT covaried for HT (linear, r = 0.07), PT covaried for BW (linear, r = 0.08), PT covaried for FFW (quadratic, R = 0.23), and PT covaried for BW and HT combined (linear, r = 0.03). The results of this study indicated that age-related increases in leg-extension and flexion PT for the current sample of young wrestlers could not be accounted for by changes in HT, BW, FFW, or HT and BW combined. These findings suggested that neural maturation may contribute to increases in leg strength across age in young wrestlers.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe a "bolsterless" technique for managing auricular hematomas in professional fighters. METHODS: Eight auricular hematomas were drained under local anesthesia by incising along an anatomical auricular crease. After evacuation of the hematoma and copious irrigation, the resultant skin flap was replaced in anatomical position, and through-and-through absorbable mattress sutures were used to secure the flap in place. Incision sites were left open and dressed with antimicrobial ointment. No bolsters were placed. The patients were given 1 week of oral antibiotic therapy. RESULTS: All 8 hematomas resolved without further intervention. All 8 ears returned to their preinjury cosmetic state. Fighters were able to return to training within a week of the initial injury. No postoperative infections or other complications were noted. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to wrestlers, mixed martial artists (also called "ultimate fighters") do not routinely wear protective head gear. As a result, they are at increased risk of recurrent auricular hematomas, often resulting in severe auricular deformities (cauliflower ear). These patients are anxious to return to training and fighting, and are reluctant to wear a bolster after repair. At their urging, we agreed to attempt this bolsterless technique. Although 2 patients in this series already had a significant cauliflower ear before being treated for the current hematoma, in all cases the auricle returned to its preinjury condition. Bolsterless treatment using mattress sutures and cosmetically placed incisions represents a successful technique for management of auricular hematomas in this population.

METHODS: Eight auricular hematomas were drained under local anesthesia by incising along an anatomical auricular crease. After evacuation of the hematoma and copious irrigation, the resultant skin flap was replaced in anatomical position, and through-and-through absorbable mattress sutures were used to secure the flap in place. Incision sites were left open and dressed with antimicrobial ointment. No bolsters were placed. The patients were given 1 week of oral antibiotic therapy. RESULTS: All 8 hematomas resolved without further intervention. All 8 ears returned to their preinjury cosmetic state. Fighters were able to return to training within a week of the initial injury. No postoperative infections or other complications were noted. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to wrestlers, mixed martial artists (also called "ultimate fighters") do not routinely wear protective head gear. As a result, they are at increased risk of recurrent auricular hematomas, often resulting in severe auricular deformities (cauliflower ear). These patients are anxious to return to training and fighting, and are reluctant to wear a bolster after repair. At their urging, we agreed to attempt this bolsterless technique. Although 2 patients in this series already had a significant cauliflower ear before being treated for the current hematoma, in all cases the auricle returned to its preinjury condition. Bolsterless treatment using mattress sutures and cosmetically placed incisions represents a successful technique for management of auricular hematomas in this population.

PURPOSE:: To identify the prevalence, magnitude and methods of rapid weight loss among judo competitors. METHODS:: Athletes (607 males and 215 females; age: 19.3+/-5.3 years; weight: 70+/-7.5 kg; height: 170.6+/-9.8 cm) completed a previously validated questionnaire developed to evaluate rapid weight loss in judo athletes, which provides a score. The higher the score obtained, the more aggressive the weight loss behaviors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and frequency analyses. Mean scores obtained in the questionnaire were used to compare specific groups of athletes using, when appropriate, Mann-Whitney U test or GLM one-way ANOVA followed by Tamhane post-hoc test. RESULTS: Eighty-six percent of athletes reported that have already lost weight to compete. When heavyweights are excluded, this percentage rises to 89%. Most athletes reported reductions of up to 5% of body weight (mean+/-SD: 2.5+/-2.3%). The most weight ever lost was 2-5% while a great part of athletes reported reductions of 5-10% (mean+/-SD: 6+/-4%). The number of reductions underwent in a season was 3+/-5. The reductions usually occurred within 7+/-7 days. Athletes began cutting weight at 12.6+/-6.1 years. No significant differences were found in the score obtained by male vs female athletes as well as by athletes from different weight classes. Elite athletes scored significantly higher in the questionnaire than non-elite. Athletes who began cutting weight earlier also scored higher than those who began later. CONCLUSION:: Rapid weight loss is highly prevalent in judo competitors. The level of aggressiveness in weight management behaviors appears to not be influenced by the gender or by the weight class but it seems to be influenced by competitive level and by the age at which athletes began cutting weight.

AIMS: Analyze the epidemiology and the distribution of judo injuries in a pediatric population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted from May 2006 to May 2008, including all patients aged less than 15 years admitted to a tertiary-level pediatric emergency unit. The data collected were age, sex, geographic origin, time and day of admission, duration in the pediatric emergency department, body weight, type and location of injuries, and progression. For statistical analysis, data were entered in Microsoft Excel tables. In the descriptive analysis, data are presented as mean values with SD. To compare qualitative variables, a chi(2) test was used and the two-tailed Fisher exact test if the expected value was lesser or equal to 5. Statistical significance was considered at P<0.05. RESULTS: During the study period, 173 patients were included, with a male:female ratio of 2.46. The mean age was 10.6+/-2.4 years. Most children were admitted during the weekend (59 %). The distribution of lesions was contusions (44 %), fractures (31 %), sprains (19 %), dislocations (3 %), and wounds (3 %). The upper extremities were more frequently affected than the lower extremities (46 % vs. 25 %), with a significant male prevalence (78 %) (P<0.0001), dominated by fractures (54 %), especially clavicle fractures (72 %). Compared to the other injuries, the male population had a significantly higher risk of fractures (P=0.04). Thirteen children required hospitalization for surgical repair of fractures. CONCLUSION: Frequent and often benign, judo accidents in children are different from adult injuries in their mechanisms and injury distribution. There is also an additional risk of growth plate damage. Risk factors have been attributed to an increased injury incidence: body weight loss over 5 % or overweight, age and judo experience, and male gender. During competition and training sessions, the evaluation and prevention of these factors could decrease the occurrence of such injuries.
